This story highlights how every animal deserves a chance for happiness and the incredible impact we can have by opening our hearts and homes.

It’s more than just a tale of one dog finding its forever home, it’s also a call to action to contribute to making the world a kinder place for our animal friends. Tails from the Animal Shelter

Did you know that more than six million pets arrive annually at community animal shelters in the United States? Of that number over three million are dogs. But of course it’s not just dogs and puppies that need homes. Shelters take in cats, kittens, birds, reptiles, and even domestic farm animals. And there are many reasons why these animals need to go to shelters.

Can I Be Your Dog?

Arfy is a homeless mutt who lives in a box in an alley. Arfy writes to every person on Butternut Street about what a great pet he’d make. His letters to prospective owners share that he’s house broken! He has his own squeaky bone! He can learn to live with cats! But, no one wants him. Won’t anyone open their heart–and home–to a lonesome dog? Readers will be happily surprised to learn just who steps up to adopt Arfy.

Madeline Finn and the Shelter Dog

After Madeline Finn meets library dog Bonnie, she asks her mother for a puppy of her own every single day. Finally, Mom says yes, and Madeline Finn chooses Star, one of Bonnie’s puppies. Then Bonnie’s owner, Mrs. Dimple, tells Madeline Finn about animal shelters―places many other pets come from. A visit to their local shelter leads Madeline Finn to ask some questions. Does anyone play with the shelter dogs, or snuggle with them, or read to them?

Clyde and Phoebe’s Animal Shelter ABCs

Animal shelters are all about fostering, volunteering, surrendering and caring for sweet animals like Phoebe and Clyde. We hope you learned a little bit more about them today and might consider supporting local animal shelters in the future!

Sunny and Friends: Stories of Shelter Pets Told in Their Own Words

This book was inspired by Sunny and Lucy, two small shelter cats whose uniquely opposite personalities speak volumes about their past. What they had in common, though, was the need for a safe and loving place to call home. It is our hope that each story in this book will raise awareness about the responsibilities of pet ownership and encourage readers to open their hearts and their homes to shelter pets.

My Pillow Keeps Moving

Dogs make good pillows, don’t they? A clever pup ends up in a cozy home, and she’ll do anything to stay there. She impersonates everything the lonely homeowner needs–a pillow, a footstool, a jacket. But in the end, being herself works best. Laura Gehl’s spare, humorous text and New Yorker cartoonist Christopher Weyant’s expressive characters will leave young readers giggling and begging for more.

Found Dogs

Babies and toddlers will delight in counting up each wriggly, wraggly rescue pup and then counting back down as each doggie is adopted. A bright, bouncy rhyme, jubilant art, and scads of adorable dogs will have wee ones giggling for more. These patient pound dogs. Now they’re family! Found dogs.

Ladybug Girl and the Rescue Dogs

Lulu is excited to meet all the rescue dogs when the pet-adoption fair comes to her local farmers’ market. She wants to take all of them home–but she already has Bingo, and Mama says one dog is enough for their family. That doesn’t mean Lulu can’t help, though. It’s time for Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad–her friends Grasshopper Girl and Bumblebee Boy–to step in! The Bug Squad can do all kinds of little but important things, like brush the dogs, play with them, and bring them water and food. And then Lulu comes up with the perfect plan to help the dogs find their forever homes. Her idea is such a success that the Bug Squad knows they’ll be back again next week. Together, they can help every dog get adopted.

The True Adventures of Esther the Wonder Pig

When Steve and Derek adopted a mini pig named Esther, they had no idea that she would turn out to be not-so-mini after all. When her new family saw just how big and wonderful Esther really was, they fell in love–and their lives changed forever. Esther would soon grow too large for her bed, and their small apartment. She got into everything, including her neighbor’s tasty garden. So the whole family moved from a small apartment to a big farm, where Esther and her animal friends could fit happily (and get into a little less mischief). Eventually, that farm would become the Happily Esther After animal sanctuary, home to rescued animals of all kinds.

Before You Were Mine

A little boy imagines what life was like for his new dog before he adopted him from a shelter. Maybe he had a boy who loved him, but the family had to move and couldn’t keep him. Maybe he belonged to someone who didn’t appreciate how mischievous puppies can be. Maybe he was treated badly. But the most important thing is that now, he can be shown all the love he’s been missing. Because this dog is home.
